It’s official! Indonesia is the 100th country accessing the Madrid Protocol

      Published on 03 Oct 2017 | 1 minute read

The news was announced during the 57th WIPO General Assembly in Geneva. On 2 October 2017, the instrument of the accession was deposited with the Director-General of WIPO, officially marking Indonesia as the 100th member of the Madrid Union and the 8th member of ASEAN to access the Protocol.

The Indonesia’s accession to the Madrid Protocol has been in preparation for years. A significant step forward was marked by the issuance of Law No. 20 of 2016 on Trademark and Geographical Indication that came into effect on 28 November 2016. The new law includes provisions on International trademark application.

As the Madrid Protocol will come into effect on 2 January 2018 for Indonesia, the government has three months to issue an implementing regulation and finalize their preparation to start accepting trademark applications under the Madrid Protocol.
