World IP Day 2024: Empowering a Sustainable Future through Innovation

      Published on 26 Apr 2024 | 6 minute read
      Happy World IP Day 2024!

Established by WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organisation), World IP Day was created to increase awareness and understanding of IP. Every year has a different theme; this year’s is “IP and the SDGs [Sustainable Development Goals]: building our common future with innovation and creativity.”

The Sustainable Development Goals are Rouse’s guiding principles. Specifically:

      Goal 4: Quality Education

      Goal 5: Gender Equality

Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

      Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities

      Goal 13: Climate Action

We are proud of our reputation as a trusted advisor to some of the world’s most valuable brands and innovators, but we are equally proud to be a conscientious global citizen supporting our local communities, providing pro bono advice to nonprofits and being at the forefront of the relationship between IP rights and the fight against climate change.

Getting involved for World IP Day

This World IP Day, Rouse’s Head of Climate Change Group Fabrice Mattei has been invited to speak at the International Bar Association’s webinar which will explore the vital role of IP in advancing SDGs and shaping a more innovative and equitable future for all.

Published today, IP Manager in our Dubai office Yasir Masood in his role as a member of the The Trademark Lawyer's editorial board, has shared his thoughts on this year's theme, which you can read here.

As well, Rouse will be represented at two national events. In Myanmar, Principal Moe Mynn Thu will be attending the Intellectual Property Department of Myanmar’s event being held at the Ministry of Commerce in Naypyidaw where there will be three presentations:

      • Let’s use IP to develop the Economic ecosystem, by Deputy Director General of IPD
      • Protecting innovations by obtaining patent protection, by Ministry of Science and Technology
      • Preventing risk of IP infringement, by the Union Supreme Court

Moe was joined by Associate, Tin Hla. Here are a couple of photos from the event.

Meanwhile in Hong Kong SAR, Hong Kong General Manager, Adelaide Yu and Hong Kong Head of Trade Marks Theresa Mak are attending a reception for World IP Day hosted by the Hong Kong Intellectual Property Department.

In Beijing earlier this week, Principals Amanda Yang and Josh Mandell attended the British Embassy’s Reception marking World IP Day. Here are Amanda and Josh with the British Ambassador to China, Caroline Wilson and Samuel Stone, IP Attaché.

On 20 April, Hong Kong General Manager, Adelaide Yu was invited to speak at a World IP Day event in Shenzhen: “IP protection and risk prevention at exhibitions in Southeast Asia”.
